Achilles 24 fin keel ‘Misty’
Misty is an Achilles 24, fin keel, blue hull.
She is currently out of the water at David Patient’s boat yard on Chandler’s Quay
in Maldon, Essex.
Currently as my pictures show the mast is down and suspended by a cradle. As far
as I can see everything is complete and in reasonable condition. My father owned
her for approximately 30 years and together when I was much younger we did a fair
amount of sailing together around UK coastal waters, mainly the south and east coasts,
trips to France, Holland, Belgium and the Channel Islands in her. He sailed solo
across the Bay of Biscay in her in 1991. In doing so he had set her up for single
handed sailing. Sadly I do not know everything he did and the specifications but
I can say he was a very competent sailor, sailing was his life.
There appear to be a full set of sails - main with batons, genoa, main gib and storm
gib plus a spinnaker with pole.
Misty has an inboard well for an outboard motor which unfortunately has become separated
from her but the plug is present.
At some point possibly about 10 years ago the keel bolts were checked/replaced.
The hull and keel seem in pretty good clean condition just needing preparation and
re-antifouling before going back in the water.
Inside the cabin needs some work as being shut up for 3-4 years the paint has peeled
in the fore cabin and some of the ply wood work needs replacing as it has become
damp and rotten, i.e. the side storage shelves need replacing.
There is also a spray hood, although just the frame, as the canvas hood needs replacing.
Misty is a very easy boat to sail, beautifully balanced and sails remarkably close
to the wind.
Over all Misty is in good condition and would make a nice project for some one to
bring her back to her former glory.
